What We Offer

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a non-invasive light treatment option for many patients who were not successful in therapeutic approaches with many ocular as well as certain systemic conditions. IPL therapy uses pulses of light to target and treat a variety of ocular conditions, including meibomian gland dysfunction, dry eye syndrome, and blepharitis. Systemic conditions that can be helped with IPL therapy include rosacea, facial telangiectasia, age spots, and acne.

During the procedure, a handheld device is used to emit pulses of light that penetrate the skin and heat up the underlying tissues. This heat promotes the production of oils, shuts down inflammation and pro-inflammatory factors that contribute to many of the conditions listed above. IPL therapy is performed in our office and typically requires a series of treatments over several weeks or months to achieve the desired results. IPL therapy is well-tolerated by patients and can be a highly effective treatment option for those suffering from chronic eye conditions.

IPL Benefits

  • Reduced inflammation: IPL therapy can help reduce inflammation in the eyelids, which is often a contributing factor in many ocular conditions, including dry eye syndrome and meibomian gland dysfunction.

  • Improved tear production: By promoting the production of oils and other substances in the meibomian glands, IPL therapy can help improve the quality and quantity of tears, which can alleviate symptoms associated with dry eye.

  • Decrease Demodex: Decrease the population of Demodex mites, which stimulate infection and boost the bacterial load on eyelids.

  • Alleviate Abnormal Blood Vessels: Destroy the abnormal blood vessels that perpetuate inflammation.

  • Non-invasive: IPL therapy is a non-invasive treatment option that does not require surgery or the use of medications. This makes it a low-risk and comfortable option for patients.

  • Long-lasting results: While multiple treatments may be necessary, IPL therapy has been shown to provide long-lasting results for many patients. This means that patients may experience relief from their symptoms for an extended period of time after completing the treatment series.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy?
Intense Pulsed Light therapy, also known as IPL therapy or IPL treatment, is a non-invasive procedure that uses broad-spectrum light pulses to address various skin concerns. It is commonly used for conditions such as rosacea, sun damage, facial flushing, pigmentation irregularities, and certain types of acne. The light energy targets specific skin structures, promoting collagen production, reducing inflammation, and improving overall skin appearance.
How does IPL therapy work?
During an IPL therapy session, a handheld device delivers precise pulses of light onto the targeted skin area. The light energy is absorbed by specific chromophores in the skin, such as hemoglobin (targeting blood vessels) or melanin (targeting pigmented areas). This absorbed energy heats up the targeted tissue, causing the desired therapeutic effects. The procedure is typically performed in a series of treatments to achieve optimal results.
What can I expect during an IPL therapy session?
Prior to the treatment, you will have a consultation with a trained professional to assess your skin condition and determine if IPL therapy is suitable for you. During the session, you will be provided with protective eyewear, and a cooling gel may be applied to the treatment area to enhance comfort. The IPL device will be applied to your skin, emitting pulses of light. You may feel a mild sensation, such as a snap or a rubber band flicking against the skin, but it is generally well-tolerated. Afterward, you can resume your normal activities with minimal downtime.
